Two PSJA T. Jefferson T-STEM students recognized for Environmental Leadership: Awarded EcoRise Grant for Innovative Project

PHARR – Troy Pedroza and Vladimir Cruz, students from PSJA T. Jefferson T-STEM Early College High School (ECHS) have been awarded a Student Innovation Project Grant from EcoRise for their “Savoring Sustainability” project proposal.

The Eco-Audit Grant, provided by EcoRise aims to empower students to become environmental leaders by providing funding for impactful projects that promote sustainability and environmental stewardship.

Troy and Vladimir’s project proposal stood out among numerous applicants showcasing their creativity, dedication, and passion for making a positive and green impact on their campus. EcoRise has proudly awarded PSJA T. Jefferson T-STEM ECHS $405 to bring the project to fruition.

The project titled Savoring Sustainability focuses on bringing composting to their school cafeteria’s food waste to transform organic waste into garden soil. As part of the project, the students interviewed their principal and head custodian to develop an administratively supported sustainability plan. They will continue the work to educate their peers and support the composting program even after they graduate high school.

Troy and Vladimir express their gratitude for being selected for the grant and share their excitement about the opportunity to bring their project to life.

“Receiving the EcoRise grant is a tremendous honor,” said Troy. “Vladimir and I were so surprised when we got the news that our project was selected. We will use the funds to buy composting bins to support our school’s gardening club.”

The project aligns with PSJA ISD’s mission to integrate the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into its curriculum. Through the project, the students developed real-world solutions for Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, demonstrating their commitment to addressing environmental challenges through tangible actions.
